Tried this YMCA and honestly wouldn’t recommend it if you’re serious about lifting. The equipment is very limited and easy to outgrow — I’ve only been training about 6 months and was already hitting the top end on multiple machines. The bigger issue was the environment. One staff member (Jeff) kept watching me the entire time and correcting everything, even when I wasn’t doing anything unsafe. He told me not to elevate my heels on front squats, then a couple minutes later said I had to keep shoes on at all times. Then I was told I couldn’t do RDLs on the rack and had to use the deadlift area — but there’s only one platform and it was already taken. On top of that, I was told not to “slam” weights when I wasn’t even dropping them. The constant interruptions made the whole workout uncomfortable and I ended up leaving early without finishing. This place might be fine for beginners or casual use, but if you’re trying to train seriously, the lack of equipment and over-monitoring makes it frustrating.

I’ve had a great experience at the Poole Family YMCA. The facility is always clean and well-maintained, which makes it really comfortable to work out here. The staff and members are also very friendly and welcoming—you can tell they genuinely care about the community. It’s a great place for anyone looking for a positive and supportive environment to stay active.

The Poole location is consistently overcrowded, not cleaned, and I consistently leave early to finish my workout at home because there are no spaces to stretch or lift weights. It also costs easily double or quadruple what Fit4Life and Planet fitness charge. There are a lot of opportunities for improvement but we stay for the convenience factor. There’s a lot of open space in the downstairs open areas, extra rooms and space in the dressing rooms that could be used. This location could Learn from the others like southeast, Poyner and Alexander, which are better cared for, laid out, and organized. I’m leaving this review because they don’t have comment cards at the location or on line.

It’s a nice facility, but the front desk lady was overly intense. Why did she ask me if I had shoes?

SICK facility! I heard it’s only a year old and has Bball courts, indoor running track, open weight room area, lockers with numbered keys and showers! Highly recommend checking the Poole YMCA out! Shout out to Switch for the quick tour.
