Kraft Family YMCA
Private
The Kraft Family YMCA in Apex runs YMCA of the Triangle day camps, led by Camp Crossroads for rising grades K-8 (ages 5-14) with swimming, crafts, sports like kickball and soccer, and games, plus a sports-focused Camp Explorer at Apex Elementary and half-day preschool Kinder and Wee camps. Camp days include early drop-off and late pickup for working families, and campers use the branch's outdoor pool, gym, and fields.

Powered by GoogleI loved the YMCA, I even grew up and went to the YMCA over 40 years ago and now that my kids are old enough I take them there, but the rules they added on children below 11 does not make since and you have to stay with the child unless you schedulle alows to go there when they have activity for them and that does not work for every family, they have more than enough staff to have the kids watched at all times of the day. I could not even leave my very well behaced 10 year old with his teen brothers to sit in the cafeteria while I workout. Last year that was not an issue, this year they have staff following you around if you have kids with you instead of looking after the kids. Management need to change the policy. The only reason Families join so they can bring their kids. I am not denying what works but I like to see the place look after younger kids that will be there for the next 5 to 10 years instead making the parents jump hoops while you have 3 people walking the floor doing nothing . They don't think of people who works late and can only show after the 2 hours child sittings is over. Younger kids can't play each other unless their parents are present with them. If you single or have teens then all works unless you can bring the younger ones to sit and draw for 2 hours with other kids, I leave my kids for soccer practice for 90 minutes at 8 years of age without me being there.
I’ve been a member of this YMCA for over 10 years and have generally appreciated having a consistent place to work out. However, my recent experience was very disappointing. While stretching in a designated yoga/stretching room upstairs (an area I use every time), a staff member told me I was not allowed to stretch there and directed me to find another space. I also was not the only person in there, just the only person told to move. The gym was extremely crowded at the time, and the alternative rooms I was shown were already full. When I explained there was no available space for me elsewhere, the restriction on using the original area still stood, which left me without a place to properly warm up. As a result, I ended up leaving and going to a different gym just to complete my workout safely. This interaction felt unhelpful and frustrating, especially given my long history with this location. I’ve also had a few other less positive interactions recently, which is disappointing overall. I hope the facility can better balance policy enforcement with practical space availability and member experience, especially during busy hours.
Clean facility and super friendly staff- highly recommend. As you enter there is a long counter with a self-scan option, or you can speak directly with the staff. At the end of the counter, as you round the corner and head into the gym, grab a towel. The locker rooms are ahead on the left and you can set the code – no need to bring your own lock. The group classes are located on the first floor, or proceed up the staircase to the indoor walking track and exercise area. The kids area is on the first floor, to the left after check-in. There is also a quiet corner- to the left of the check-in area- with tables, chairs, and Wi-Fi access. On the second floor there are exercise machines, hand weights & barbells, and a separate area with mats, kettle bells, bands, and, exercise balls, etc. The area is well-designed for the size with lots of options. Having said that- each piece of equipment is very close to the neighboring piece of equipment so it doesn’t feel as spacious as it could. I find people concentrate on their workout and it’s never felt awkward. They also host a lot of events, programs, challenges, and opportunities to socialize. Using the app on your phone, you can quickly check-in using the scanner, track all of your workouts, sign-up for classes and have access to informational videos and workouts, or work with a personal trainer. There is so much here! I want to give a special shout out to Riley who taught the swing dance class- thank you for a fun and easy to learn class! I’m not the best dancer and I had fun and feel confident I could dance a basic swing step and not trip over my partner! Looking forward to the next class.
Classes are always booked and extremely hard to get into. People are rude coming into classes late. Gym is packed and they just keep adding more members when there is no room and classes are already full. Membership is expensive for what you get. Seems the front desk is overstaffed. Treadmills too close together, got sick because someone came in next to me with a cold. Staff doesn't even know how new treadmills work. Needs more time between classes for comings and goings and setup. Overall, there are 2 great instructors, 1 good and their classes are forever full.
Best Y in the triangle area. The hip thrust machine and 6+ squat racks and 4+ bench presses make even busy days have seamless workouts. Equipment is up-to-date, facilities are clean and modern, and the open concept makes the best use of the space. I personally never used the pool or daycare, so I can’t speak to that. Only areas I saw for improvement are the A/C system that gives out from time to time in the peak summer months, and I would love to see a second smith machine. I moved away and still think about this gym over a year later.
