Crystalaire Adventures runs co-ed wilderness expedition trips for ages 8-18, traveling in northern Michigan and on extended expeditions to places such as North Manitou Island, Isle Royale and Pictured Rocks. Trips are camper-led: guides provide the safety framework and skill instruction, then step back while campers choose the trails they hike and the food they eat and make decisions by consensus. The capstone Cojourn is a 16-day leadership trip for ages 15-18 that participants design and lead themselves, based out of the organization's Traverse City headquarters. The program has operated since 1920 and its trips emphasize unplugging from the modern world.
