Mary Free Bed YMCA
Private
The Mary Free Bed YMCA hosts one of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids' branch-based summer day camps, running Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for children ages 5-12 who have completed young fives or kindergarten. Ten themed weeks run June 8 through August 14, mixing songs, arts and crafts, character development, team building, sports, fine arts, reading, science and swimming; the Y provides morning and afternoon snacks and campers bring a peanut-free lunch. Camps are licensed by the State of Michigan, run a 1:10 counselor-to-camper ratio and include no screen time, and a Y membership is not required. Bussing to YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin is offered from this branch. Weekly rates are $275 for members and $325 for non-members, with financial assistance available.

Powered by GoogleThis place has all the equipment you need and is always clean and well maintained. I especially appreciate how big the track is - 5 laps to a mile is impressive for an indoor facility! The lap pool and separate family pools are also very nice. Strength training for anybody from ages 5 and up and everything is accessible to all. Kidzone is awesome - my son asks to go every day! The basketball courts stay busy but there is lots of space.
The swimming pools are large enough to accommodate plenty of people and the hot tub area is just the right temperature. I really like the new EGYM system and am encouraged that it will improve my physical wellbeing. There are enough workout machines so I never have to wait for an available machine. I am very satisfied with the YMCA experience and am working on developing a regular schedule.
After being members since 2017, we finally canceled our membership at the Mary Free Bed YMCA and moved to an alternative workout facility. The facility itself is fine, but the culture is not. Leadership and some of the employees consistently come across as unfriendly and uninterested in the members they serve. Rarely a smile, rarely a greeting, rarely a “thank you for coming.” Too often it feels like members are an inconvenience rather than the reason the YMCA exists. People come to the Y to improve their physical and mental health. A welcoming atmosphere matters, and unfortunately that has not been our experience. Another ongoing frustration has been the lack of space for stretching, mobility work, and HIIT-style floor exercises. We have repeatedly asked over the years if members could use an available room when classes are not being held and have always been told no because of “vandalism.” Yet other YMCA locations, such as Wolverine and Downtown, seem to have figured out how to accommodate members while still protecting their facilities. We stayed far longer than we probably should have because the location was convenient. In the end, convenience was no longer enough to overcome the poor member experience and unwillingness to address reasonable requests. The YMCA’s mission is about strengthening community and supporting healthy living. Sadly, that mission is not reflected in the day-to-day experience at this location.
Pros: Clean facilities, nice equipment and pools and fellow fitness enthusiasts are willing to share. Pools are always warm for laps and bikes are always available. You are always greeted at the front check in site! 👍😎 Cons: Signing up using “Daxko” for free and paid classes. I’m always required to sign up for membership when I already have one and required to pay more! 😤😡 I would love for someone to help me to enter “Daxko” without the “paywall” every time! Perhaps it’s time for the Y to scrap “Daxko” and go with another software! It’s horrible, disgusting and degrading! 😤😡
This YMCA has so many options for working out. The pool, basketball courts, free-weights, track, and cardio equipment. I haven't taken any of their classes but there appears to be a bunch. The only thing I feel it's lacking is a dedicated space for stretching and using lighter free-weights, in a separate space from the main gym area, that isn't a walkway. I also love the sauna and hot tub! Great place to get healthy!
