Martha's Vineyard Ocean Academy runs Youth Voyages for ages 8–17 in which participants join the crew of a working sailing ship for a multi-day liveaboard passage. Campers sail and stand watch as crew while swimming, beach-combing and visiting harbor towns, with voyages beginning and ending in Vineyard Haven Harbor. Sessions run roughly six to eleven days in August; tuition is set on a sliding scale ($690–$4,420 depending on voyage) so cost adjusts to family circumstances.

The best summer camp my children have ever been apart of. Our initial goal for sending our children aboard the Shenandoah was for them to experience life at sea and learn what it takes to become a sailor. After their first summer, they BEGGED to return. They loved the experience of living below deck, pulling up the sails, singing sea shanties, and eating in the galley, and SO MUCH LAUGHING the entire week. The connections made with their peers and the crew aboard have brought them much joy, memories, and excellent penpals. One of my children aspires now to purchase a schooner and sail for years to come. We feel truly lucky to have found such a well organized and unique optimistic ocean experience lead by wonderful people.

Our kids have voyaged with MV Ocean Academy on summer trips and school trips for four years now and have had amazing experiences. Ian, Casey, and their crew do a fantastic job with the voyages, making them educational, formative, and fun-filled trips for the kids. So grateful to have this opportunity in our community.

My son, Viggo, has gone on a MVOA adventure for several summers now. I can’t say enough about how transformative it has been for him. This year, he is stepping up to the 10-day voyage, and he couldn’t be more excited. It seems to give him a life-affirming blend of responsibility, joy, relaxation, adventure, camaraderie, team-work. I think when he looks back on his life as a boy, these adventures will be a defining part of his story, regardless of what he chooses to do. We are so grateful for your commitment to the kids and to building their trust in themselves and each other… and for the opportunity for them to see themselves in real communion with the wild beauty of the sea!

The Shendandoah experience was really life-changing for my teen. A year later she is beyond excited to return for another camp session and to reconnect with the friends she sailed with last year. I have recommended this opportunity to so many families looking for a unique, high-quality program in New England. Don't hesitate to send your kids out for a week or two. Be prepared to hear about it for the whole next year!

My children both girls ages 12 and 13 both attended Ocean Academy for a week in July. One of the best choices I have ever made. Diverse culture, amazing instructors and helped them with many life skills. Came back from camp more determined and happy. Highly recommend!
