The Maria Mitchell Association is Nantucket's nonprofit science centre, and its Summer Discovery camps run age-banded programs across the island for children 5 to 17. Wee Explorers (ages 5–6) covers week-long themes on Nantucket's marine ecosystems and natural wonders; Junior Historians (7–10) explores the island's whaling era; Eco-Investigators (10–12) is a full-day outbound program with beach cleanups, kayaking, hiking, seining and Leave No Trace principles; and teen programs (13–17) such as Ecologists of Tomorrow and Marine and Terrestrial Ecology run 1:15–4:15pm. Groups stay small, at a 5:1 or 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio depending on age, and scholarships and discounts are offered.

A spokesperson for the Classroom came out to greet me after I was furiously beating on the door to let me in. She said they would be open in 3 minutes and to NOT worry.
