Our sons have made the trip from Northern Virginia to southern Maine each of the last 4 years. I cannot overstate what a special place Birch Rock Camp for Boys is. In some ways, it is a traditional summer camp. Swimming, boating, archery, sports, etc. all set on a picturesque lake. But what really sets it apart is the culture of "Help the Other Fellow." Birch Rock is a place where boys learn to become young men. They'll have great fun of course, but they will also learn to be kinder, politer and more compassionate. Birch Rock helped our older boy--who was shy and a little socially awkward--to be more self confident. His experiences at "The Rock" changed his life in a very positive way. Both my sons have been attending Birch Rock since they were 10 years old. My oldest just completed his 9th year (2 as a counselor) and my other son his 7th season at The Rock. They are confident, well-mannered, and independent teenagers that look at life as opportunities to embrace new challenges. BRC helped to mold them into people that are patience getting to know others, confident in their own skin, and to challenge themselves to go beyond what they think is possible. My youngest son has been dreaming about completing his whale, which is a 5 mile swim around lake Mcwain since he first got to camp, 7 years ago. This year after weeks of training, it took him 3 hours, but he completed this accomplishment. One of the greatest lessons a boy can learn, is that even what seems unattainable, with hard work, is possible.
