Camp Discovery is the Altavista Area YMCA's summer day camp for children ages 4 to 12, offered at the Y and several area school and library sites. Open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., each week has a theme, a field trip and swim days, plus activities like bowling, a ropes course, Color Wars and science projects. Families pay only for weeks attended and financial assistance is available.

★★Shane VanHookWe are from Lynchburg and my son had a basketball game scheduled here on a Saturday. Great building and very nice ladies at the front that directed us to the courts. The only issue I had is that we showed up early and caught the last quarter of the 9 and 10 y.o kids. The game went into overtime and it was a tough loss for one team. Their coach yelled at them for losing and said y'all should be ashamed of yourselves! Same time blocking the door where everyone exits and enters were two mother's Screaming F bombs and threatening to throw hands with each other. Then I realized we were in Altavista, so it totally checked out! The police ended up get called and they showed up about 20 minutes later. To say these were classless people would be an understatement. I'll never take my son back there for sure. I felt so bad for the kids, that's what it's supposed to be about right....The kids....? Straight up trash people, they ruin the fun and team experience for kids. The coach and those parents should be ashamed of themselves! That's all and stay classy Altavista!
