Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts is a Black female-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts school in Montclair, founded in 1995 by Sharron Miller, a Juilliard-trained former Alvin Ailey principal dancer and Broadway veteran. Its Prime Time Summer Arts is a full-day program for ages 6-14 with daily classes in art, music, dance and drama plus swimming, run as two three-week sessions that each end in a fully staged, free public performance; a Preschool Prime Time camp serves ages 3-5. The academy offers need-based tuition assistance, and families qualifying for Free or Reduced Lunch or NJ Families First automatically qualify, paying only what they can afford.

My son is in his second round of the breakdancing class for kids 5-8 and loves it - the instructors are great and keep the kids really engaged. It’s a great opportunity to learn fun skills and build strength, flexibility, coordination, and control for other sports and activities. They also build confidence through opportunities to dance in front of (and with the support of) their entire class. 10/10 - would recommend

Our two boys Duke and Taison go to Friday Breakdance class and love it. The class is so much fun for them, teachers are great and the other students are really good kids.

Been sending my kid for 2 years to dancing classes! The instructor has been always encouraging! The new place is very nice! Windows for parents to watch and enjoy!

We have loved every minute of having my child take dance at SMAPA. Not only do the teachers have balance of fun and teaching technique (which I’ve found lacking in other studios) to the youngest dancers, they’re also very kind and nurturing! My child takes Breakdance with Mr. Irv and Mr. Gavin and Boys’ Intro to Ballet with Mr. Edgar and loves going. He’s also done their Summer camp and had a blast! He’s learning so much and I love seeing the growth in his dancing and his confidence. I’ve also taken classes there myself (Ballet with Melissa!) and walk away feeling fantastic every time! She is a treasure and a Fantastic instructor! Thank you so much!

I recently purchased Jazz shoes for my six year old son for Theater Camp. The SMAPA Dance Store was the closet store next to driving to the City to purchase dance shoes on a Sunday at that. Briana was so kind and wonderful on the phone. I called on a Sunday and she pulled the potential sizes ahead of time. Originally, I was not going to bring my son. Briana encouraged me to bring him in order to have him try them on in person. I am so glad I listened! My ETA was 12:01pm and the store was due to close at noon. Briana said no worries, she would stay in order for me to try the shoes on. WOW! By the time we found parking it was 12:05pm ( we scored a great spot a block away) and we called Briana to advise we were walking up now. She was so sweet; so personable and assured us that she would stay open for us to arrive. Turns out my son was a larger and wider size and Briana had just the size and width that we needed! She was absolutely lovely! Thank you Briana for your exceptional customer service!
