The Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation is a Chicago nonprofit running two youth sailing programs as a public/private partnership with the Chicago Park District, in which the foundation funds instructors, boats and maintenance while the Park District provides the facilities. Its adaptive program (JGASP) gives classroom and on-water instruction to sailors with physical disabilities from the Judd Goldman Sailing Center at Burnham Harbor, using a fleet of eight Freedom 20s built specifically for disabled sailors plus Sonars and 2.4-metre boats for advanced racing; all the boats are stable and will not capsize. Its Junior Sailing Program (JGJSP) teaches Chicago inner-city youths ages 8 to 12 in 7'7" Vanguard Prams on the city's renovated water-fed lagoons, bringing the program into neighbourhoods rather than requiring families to travel to the lakefront. Both programs share the foundation's stated goal of helping participants build self-esteem and independence.
