The Harold and Mitzie James 4-H Camp & Outdoor Learning Center sits on a secluded 55-acre wooded site at 6,500 feet on Mingus Mountain in the Prescott National Forest, run by University of Arizona Cooperative Extension 4-H. Overnight campers stay in cabins that sleep up to 100 and take part in archery, shooting sports, blacksmithing, kayaking and fishing on the camp lake, land navigation, outdoor survival skills, swimming, and nature, science and filmmaking instruction. The site is open roughly April 15 to October 1 and supports both day use and overnight camp. It is ACA-accredited.

It's not unusual to see wildlife...birds, deer, squirrels....and the weather is pleasant. They have a small lake and provide kayaks and canoes. But the physical environment is worthless if the direction were not there. The director and co- director are both incredibly experienced at what they do AND friendly! All in all my experiences there have been incredible! I love this camp.

★★★★Kelly MartinTHIS IS FOR THE CAMP AT MINGUS MOUNTAINS. My son's school did a 3 day field trip here. It's so awesome. It's difficult to get to since the signs are so small and difficult to see since there's a bunch of small dirt roads going in. I took the wrong road several times. I drove my car and wished it was a 4 wheel drive SUV because there are some REALLY bumpy narrow areas and a truck would take up the whole road. Would definitely be difficult to go down quickly for an emergency and no lighting at night and dirt road had no guard rail. NO CELL SERVICE. I was able to get a little bit of service on the bridge before the very first cabin you pass. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND going there if there has been or expected to be a lot of rain. Between the hail storm and small snow it got the day before there were puddles farther in right before the camp that I had to get out and check how deep it was because it was as wide as my car and there was no way around it. Luckily since it wasn't a huge storm and not too deep. The camp itself is awesome. The cabins were rustic and updated. The kiddos had bunk beds (very thin mats) and were so cute. The dining area is the perfect size. The restrooms (separated for male and female) are not far from the cabins but very good size with showers as well. VERY clean and accessible. The grounds are exactly what you would expect at campgrounds. Lots of trees, hiking, swimming area, wildlife (there are signs everywhere of no hunting or shooting so you're very protected from those possible accidents). I loved it there. There were people camping in other areas with tents and campers. There were also smaller cabins for rent. I would love to go there again. It took about an hour and 45 mins to get to from Prescott.
