once you arrive, you get out of the car and walk up to flagpole hill. At the top, you turn around and take in the nature. You can see all of the dirt roads running through the camp, the different trees, and forest paths. In the summer everything is green, hundreds of different colored greens fill the tree line. The grass is soft and a bright green color, soaking in the sunlight that falls upon it. About a quarter-mile from the hill is the lake. Skinner lake is a small, beautiful lake that borders the camp. It is perfect for fishing, swimming, or boating. On blazing, hot days, floating in the lake or tanning on the docks are both ways to conquer the heat. On the sunny low heat days’ paddle boarding or canoeing through the lake is a good way to spend your time. Boating over to the island and docking and exploring the beautiful lad not touched by mankind is amazing. But do not forget your hammock, swinging in the tree, admiring the blue sky through the tree line is a perfect way to relax and take a mid-day nap. Boating at night is one of the most peaceful things one can do. The stars shining in the sky and in the lake are bright as ever, not being touched by the slightest light pollution. Boating through the darkness in the silence of the night really can calm a person down and put them at peace. Flagpole hill is another popular stargazing spot. Being the highest place of elevation in camp puts you closer to the stars. This has only been a description of the summer months. In the fall the trees are filled with any autumn color imaginable. Fiery oranges, blazing reds, and bright yellows fill the forest and bring it to life. Hammocking in the colder weather with a blanket and staring up into these vibrant colors is an amazing experience. The cold breeze blowing through you as you hike the trails of the wood on the sunny day awakens your senses and you begin to experience everything. Leaves falling all around you and making a carpet on the forest floor; the crunch of already fallen leaves as you step on them fills the silence and serenity. The reflection of the vibrant colors off the lake has got to be one of the best views I have experienced. It looks almost as if there is a forest of burning leaves inhabiting the lake. The shallow water is clear and shows new life as minnows’ scurry around the water. As it starts to cool off and the trees lose all of their leaves and fall has given way to winter, the camp stays its beautiful self. Even though the trees are bare the vein like way the branches reach out is pleasing to the eye. The sky is as blue as ever as the snow reflect the light back in to the atmosphere. Standing on top of flagpole hill one can see the lake through the barren trees. It wraps around the whole backside of the camp behind all the cabins. Once the lake becomes frozen it is safe to walk or ride quads out on. The beautiful ice contains air bubbles that did not escape in enough time, waves that did not finish rolling. It is almost as if the lake is stuck in time. As you slide across the frozen lake you reminisce about the summer months you spent there or the days you spent sitting on the sand admiring the fall leafs. When the ice melts and the trees start to awaken the camp slowly becomes its summer self. It begins prepping for the warm weather by growing grass, blooming flowers, and giving the trees their leafs back. The puddles reflecting the bright blue sky and puffy white clouds. It is a beautiful place year around, I cannot imagine not visiting in all seasons, it really is a serene experience. As you exit the camp you leave differently than you came, calm, relaxed, joyful. The saying on the wood sign as you leave says it all, “Do not let the world around you squeeze you into its mold,” Romans 12:2. The experience changes you differently every visit, it really is a life changing camp. Please, please visit Camp Lael, it is an amazing experience.
