This review reflects my personal experience at the YMCA facility. Overall, I found the condition of the building to be below acceptable standards in terms of cleanliness and hygiene. Several areas appeared poorly maintained, with noticeable odors and an environment that did not meet reasonable expectations for a facility serving families and children. Although I was told that one particular room was more suitable, I did not find it significantly cleaner than the others. It may be slightly more tolerable, but in my view, it still does not meet appropriate hygiene standards. Furthermore, despite clearly expressing that another room had a strong odor and poor cleanliness, this was normalized and dismissed. I find this approach unacceptable and not aligned with the standards expected from a service-oriented institution. I was also informed that my daughter must use the “family room,” and that children under 11 are not permitted in other areas. I find this type of rigid restriction inappropriate. If a child is accompanied by a parent, such limitations should be applied with more flexibility. As a paying customer, it is concerning to be told what can and cannot be used in such a restrictive manner. It was explained to me that these rules are in place for my child’s “safety.” However, emphasizing safety while failing to address evident hygiene concerns presents a clear inconsistency. When I raised concerns regarding cleanliness, air quality, and unpleasant odors, I was told that these conditions are normal and that the facility is cleaned daily. However, my direct observations do not align with these statements. I also found the customer approach to be lacking in responsiveness and solution-oriented thinking. Even when I raised my concerns formally and respectfully, I did not feel that they were received in a constructive or supportive manner. Additionally, I have noticed that similar concerns are reflected in other reviews, which suggests that this may not be an isolated experience. It is also important to note that this is not my first negative experience with YMCA locations; I have encountered similar issues at multiple branches. This pattern raises concerns that the problem may be more systemic in nature. Under these circumstances, I have serious doubts as to whether meaningful and lasting improvements will be made. For this reason, I do not intend to return to this facility. Separately, my child has developed a skin condition. While I cannot definitively determine the cause, I cannot ignore the possibility that hygiene conditions—particularly in shared areas such as pools—may be a contributing factor. This is not a conclusion, but a concern that should be acknowledged given the overall environment. I hope the management takes these concerns seriously and prioritizes meaningful improvements in hygiene, cleanliness, and overall facility standards.

For a $2 million operating budget and being a member for over 10 years and now bringing my kids, the downfall to witness and the amount of resources this YMCA has is ridiculous. At the least, this place should be spotless with all the funding it receives an available programs, etc. Nothing against the people, people are great but come on guys visit any other YMCA in New York State and this is hands-down, the worst as far as basic cleanliness and maintenance.

I love this Y - have been going since about May and it is a wonderful alternative to the busier gyms. Less packed, good amount of machines, weights, everything you could need. Wonderful cardio room. And don’t sleep on the pool - almost always available for laps - which is a must. Thank you Y, for existing!! My only potential concern are the young ones that find themselves in the weight room, and weight room etiquette, which most are typically good at reminding others about.

I love YMCA! They added more group exercise classes - my favorites are Rumble, Strong Nation & Boot camp! , and several strength small group training classes - Yay! Total Boost & Women on Weight - recently and they are great! There are many options all day long. The swimming pool is much cleaner than before. Staffs are super friendly and efficient. I am so glad I live near Ithaca Y :)

This YMCA is such a gem! I am very new to strength training and got so much help from Tara with setting up the machines! All the staff were lovely and the gym was clean. It also wasn’t too crowded which was amazing. Thank you for a wonderful experience!
