Vanguard Theater Company in Montclair runs two summer performing-arts programs: VTC Kids Camp, a musical theater day camp for ages 8-13 that in a recent season ran July 6-30, and DREAM Summerstock, a two-week sleepaway intensive for serious theater performers ages 12-19 staffed by professional actors and directors. The day camp focuses on helping young actors trust their creative ideas, perform in front of others and support their peers.

The reason for the 3-star rating though is the director spoke beforehand about the inclusiveness and diversity in the show, yet the opposite sentiment was expressed in many scenes. It was cringe actually that took away from the power of the musical as a whole… sometimes it’s best to stick to the script.
