Tuckahoe Recreation Club is a members-only family recreation club on Great Falls Street in McLean with more than 3,000 members, three outdoor pools, a 6-lane indoor pool open year-round, six lighted tennis courts, a fitness center, mini golf, playground and summer grille. Its summer camp offering is tennis: a three-hour-a-day outdoor program that groups players by level using sponge, red, orange, green-dot and yellow balls and closes each week with a Friday Tennis Olympics. The club also runs daily summer swim classes open to members and non-members, swim and dive teams with over 300 athletes ages 5-18, water polo, pickleball and competitive tennis.

★★Melissa Terzis ProakisMeh. We were members for three years but ultimately we left for a few reasons. First the pool is always freezing. It doesn’t stop people from getting in, but it is definitely uncomfortably cold for us. Second, the lifeguards literally live on their whistles. They are always yelling at people and it’s super annoying because most of the time it’s just people having fun and it’s not dangerous. One of the last straws was when one screamed across the pool at two other lifeguards for chatting during the 15min adult swim time. Seriously? Keep that behind closed doors or walk your lazy self over there and tell the two lifeguards to stop talking. Third, we got a letter that dues were going up 20% and would continue to go up because there was $3M of deferred maintenance needed. For the price of initiation ($3000) and the annual fee of $2500 it was a colossal waste of money for a more than subpar club. When we emailed that we were quitting they were back: “thanks.” Didn’t even ask why. So ridiculous.

Due to its size, it takes some effort to get to know other members but it us worth the effort. There is usually a wait list but the winter swim membership is open for swimming fall to late spring and is a good way to know the club.
