Steel River Playhouse is a nonprofit community theatre at 245 East High Street in Pottstown that runs a summer performing arts camp for ages 6-16 in July and August, alongside year-round classes, production workshops and Broadway intensives. Campers work on acting, singing and theatre production and rehearse a musical, with grades 3-6 and grades 7-12 working in separate cohorts on titles such as Beauty and the Beast and Shrek. The playhouse reaches roughly 2,000 area children a year, many underserved or at risk, and offers camp scholarships.

Powered by GoogleThis review is not about Steel River Playhouse itself, as we have enjoyed many productions there over the years. Rather, it concerns an interaction with the Executive Director during a recent performance. I attended a show with my child and their friend, one of whom has special needs. Upon arriving, I discovered that my vehicle had a completely flat tire and was not drivable. With the show about to begin, I seated the children and spent the performance trying to coordinate assistance through AAA, a family member, a tow truck, and ultimately transportation home. I was alone with two children, had no one available to pick us up, and was facing the very real possibility of being stranded after the performance. During the show, I quietly stepped out twice to handle these arrangements. I did so respectfully, without disrupting the performance or interfering with other patrons’ enjoyment. I even apologized to staff in advance for having to step out. The second time I left the theater, the Executive Director—who had already appeared visibly frustrated—made the comment, “Some people actually paid for their tickets to the show.” Again the comment unfounded in that I had not done anything to interfere with anyone’s ability to enjoy the show. My family uses an Access Card due to a child’s qualifying medical condition. The implication that our attendance was somehow less legitimate than that of paying patrons was both unnecessary and hurtful, especially given the circumstances. I was dealing with an emergency, trying to ensure two children could get home safely, and doing everything possible to avoid disrupting anyone else’s experience. What disappointed me most was the lack of empathy. Emergencies happen. A little kindness and understanding would have gone a long way. Instead, I left feeling judged at a moment when I was already under considerable stress. I want to emphasize that every other interaction I have had with Steel River Playhouse staff has always been positive, and we have genuinely enjoyed the productions we have attended there. My concern is solely with this interaction and the message it sent.
We enjoyed the musical Guys and dolls. Although they were students played, they were soo talented and their performance was amazing. It fit about 200 people's, but seats were comfortable and sound was great. Purchased 'Wizard of Oz' and 'It's a wonderful life' as well after the show.
The playhouse maybe seats 200 but comfortably. The lighting, effects were top notch. We saw Mary Poppins and the folks who performed were beyond what we would have ever dreamed to see. Top notch professionals, but certainly just very serious enthusiasts. The performance was spectacular. The singing was beyond amazing. They could have been on Broadway and maybe they have been. The seating was comfortable and raised so the person in front you didn't block your view at all. I'd highly recommend this local theater. What a gem Pottstown has among them. Also I'd like to note that apparently they've really revitalized the downtown area, it was safe and seemed to have excellent restaurants all around the theater. Go if you get a chance, you won't be disappointed!
Updated April 2024 We went to see the musical Nunsense A-men for my daughters birthday! Steel River never disappoints! The actors were hilarious and extremely talented with singing, dancing and acting! You know it is a good show when you are still talking about it the next day! We are already planning on our next show to see. Photos, audio and videos are not permitted during the show but you can take a few before and afterwards. December 2023 We just saw the play Elf and loved it! If you like theatre; plays, musicals and comedy improv, then you must visit Steel River Playhouse located on High Street, right in the center of Pottstown, Pa. There are two theatre rooms. One downstairs and one upstairs. Wherever you are seated, you can hear and view the stage comfortably. Each performance is exciting to see. The actors consist of both seasoned professionals or upcoming talented amateurs, depending on the show. Either way, you will not be disappointed. There is a snack bar on the premises and you can purchase both alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks also. The seats are plush and comfortable. The venue and bathrooms are clean. A plus side of the Playhouse being on High Street is that you can walk the street before or after the show to get a bite to eat at several different places or browse some shops. There is no charge for parking on Saturdays and Sundays so you can park curbside on the street or there are several parking lots available. Steel River also offers instrumental lessons and has summer camp programs for children.
Stumbled upon this place while looking for a local place to enjoy and decided to go to. For a small theater, they put on a big show! The production is excellent. The talent sings, dances, and acts for the shows. The stage always looks great. The lighting and music and everything is on point. Tickets are only $30. They offer concession with some snacks, drinks, wine, and beer. The lobby area has some seating and tables. Bathrooms are very clean. Staff are friendly. Theater chairs are comfy. I would highly recommend it!
