Recently the way she has been treated by staff has been incredibly disappointing and honestly upsetting. Staff members have told her they can’t help her because of her disability, which feels completely unacceptable for a place that is supposed to serve the community. Instead of being supportive or respectful, she has been given dirty looks and made to feel like she doesn’t belong there. What makes it even worse is that other customers have approached her and told her about things staff members have said about her behind her back. Hearing that employees are talking negatively about someone with a physical disability is extremely unprofessional and hurtful. The YMCA is supposed to be an inclusive place where everyone feels welcome, regardless of ability. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. No one should feel judged, unwelcome, or feel like a burden because they use a wheelchair. I hope management takes this seriously and addresses how their staff treats people with disabilities, and maybe educate your staff so they don’t discriminate, because right now the environment is anything but inclusive.
