Operation Xcel is a Greensboro-area nonprofit offering free after-school and summer programs for elementary and middle school students across the Piedmont Triad. Its '3 Steps Ahead' summer camp is a six-week, full-day academic enrichment program with certified teachers covering math, reading, science, STEAM, robotics and social-emotional learning, plus athletics and Friday field trips. All services, including transportation, are free.

The Executive Director, Charlene Gladney, is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children, who are struggling academically -- specifically in the areas of math and science. The staff, which includes both paid and volunteer teachers and tutors, provide each child the individual attention and assistance they need to tackle math and science curricula. Children seem to thrive in this caring environment and, as a result, grades and self esteem have noticeably improved. Students are able to attend the program as long as there is a need. Operation Xcel also runs a summer enrichment camp which builds upon prior learning.
