I paid for my daughter's May swim lessons and called to cancel within hours of payment because she couldn't attend due to health conditions. The front desk told me the supervisor would process my refund and booked June lessons instead as a replacement. Based on that promise, I accepted the June booking in good faith. The supervisor then emailed me citing a 6-day cancellation policy and refused the refund, the same refund their own staff had promised me. Now I'm left with two months of paid lessons I didn't ask for, zero refund, and a company that makes verbal promises they don't keep. I'll be cancelling my membership and disputing the charge with my bank. Would not recommend.

I like the Oakland Y a lot. Diverse members, fun classes and parking isn't too hard. My only complaint is that the women's showers are run down; missing tiles, some showers don't work and only some of the showers get truely hot. It's frustrating to see improvements being done on other parts of The Y, while letting the women's locker room continue to deteriorate. The Aqua aerobics are A+, especially Steven and Lisa's classes.

Every time I play basketball at the oakland y there is an older black employee that ruins the experience. The first time she told me I couldn’t have the black foam thing on the court and guess what, they made it so you could have it on the court. Another time is she told me and some people that we can’t play full court even though people play full court all the time. Another time she told me and some kids that we aren’t playing “real” basketball even though we were. But other than that the ymca is fine.

A maze inside, but overall fantastic, clean facilities. I did not see anybody that wasn't here specifically to work out (as mentioned in past reviews). I went for lap swimming today. At 9 am on Wednesdays they start a water aerobics class in half the pool so ended up lane sharing, which is understandable. $20/day to use the pool or $45/month for membership. Pricey for a day pass but I don't mind as a trial, especially for the nice conditions of the locker rooms and the pool. Lanes divided by fast, med, slow, etc. which was more or less adhered to. If you compete (2'44"/100m or faster), this is probably not the best pool for you. There are lots of seniors and water walkers. I swam around people--NBD for one day. Beginners or intermediates would probably be happy here on a regular basis. Full shower facilities and lockers available for free--just leave an ID to borrow a padlock.
