The Los Angeles Maritime Institute runs the TopSail Youth Program, a sail-training program for students in 3rd through 12th grade that has operated for more than 30 years aboard the 110-foot brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson and the 130-foot schooner American Pride. Youth crew the ships themselves — setting sails, learning navigation, examining marine life and testing water quality — with a curriculum built around teamwork, leadership, STEM and environmental awareness. Summer options include a sleepaway tall-ship camp of 5 or 12 days for ages 10-17 and an Explorer Day Camp in Long Beach for ages 7-10. The nonprofit also runs single-day sails and multi-day voyages year-round for schools and youth-serving organizations.

Though it’s more of a cruise as you leave the harbor and go north a short way, it was still very enjoyable. You can bring snacks and beverages (just no glass please) and enjoy the sail. The crew was wonderful about answering questions and letting you help with the rigging. It’s a great way to celebrate a birthday with a few friends!
