Went to the rec center and bought a membership for our family. Our main interest is for our 8 year old son to play in the pool especially during the day since we homeschool him. We played basketball then went to the pool. The boys jumped in during open swim. We were then told that they can’t swim unless an adult was in the pool with them, but she would make an exception for today. There was no sign or information posted prior to purchasing the pass or getting into the pool. The manager asked if she could make an exception since he was turning 9 in a month and the pool manger declined. You can drop your child off underage for pool instruction, but can’t sit on the side of the pool and watch your child while there is an on duty lifeguard as well and people in the pool office eyeing you down. We asked for a Refund and the Ladies at the front desk were so nice. The manager tried to be very helpful in the situation and I really appreciated her efforts.

The rec is always a fun place to be. I love going there many times per week to lift and swim. However, the facilities seem to have taken a slight downturn in recent months. The bathrooms are especially dreadful in the men’s locker room (makes you wonder where $120 per year, per person goes to), and some machines like the C2 rower (which slides across the floor) are in constant disrepair.

My daughter and I love to go to the VB Rec Centers and this is the closest to our home. The equipment has always been functional, clean, and in good condition when we’ve gone. The building is well-maintained (this one is old, I’ve been going for almost 30 years!) and always clean. My only complaint is the lockers near the weight room are a bit janky but everything else is great! I also enjoy the drop-in childcare for my toddler (ages 3 and up, gotta be potty trained).

The Virginia Beach Recreation Centers are an amazing deal at $110.00 a year, compared to other gyms in the area that charge $350.00 and up per year. I've tried all the Rec Centers and they are all great, but Great Neck is my personal favorite because the place has a great vibe and all the folks that work there are super chill. It's also really great to work out with regular nice people who are enjoying their day and being friendly. The drop in Fitness Classes are a great way to stay in shape. Thanks!
