Kempsville Recreation Center is one of five Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation sites running the city's Recreation Center Camp, a full-day summer child care camp for children who have just completed kindergarten through 5th grade. The camp fills the day with activities, games, crafts and special events and runs 6:30am to 6:00pm at $225 per week across a ten-week season from June 15 to August 21, with individual weeks available. The 87,000 sq ft center - Virginia Beach's first, opened in 1977 and renovated in 2017 - houses an indoor pool with a play structure and aqua track, an indoor track and a double gym. Registration opens in blocks, with priority for families already in the city's before/after school programs or last summer's camps before open registration.
The practical details
We list only what the camp itself publishes, and programs change — dates, prices, ages and availability can all move after we check. Confirm the details on the camp’s own website and contact Kempsville Recreation Center directly before you register or pay. Last checked August 2026.

Powered by GoogleThis place is huge! The staff are very nice and helpful. I love everything about this place! The pool is super nice and I especially like the Lazy River walking area. The gym has lots of space and equipment and the upstairs walking track is great. There's pickle ball, badminton, basketball, exercise classes etc and real nice outdoor tennis courts.
I don't know what they were thinking when this location was rebuilt. The workout area is so small. They have a ton of cardio machines which aren't all being used at once. The machines that are needed like the legpress., ab and adductor machine, chest and squat machines are limited to one machine or none at all. We all in here waiting forever and fighting for equipment. They need to clear out some cardio equipment or take it upstairs where they have more cardio equipment. Then put more weight training equipment downstairs.
Love this recreation center. One of the reasons to feel good about being a VA Beach resident is that you get an annual membership for $120 and you get access to all the amenities (pool, gym, track, locker room, etc) and classes (tai chi, Zumba, yoga, etc ). Not only at this location but also other recreation centers as well! Parking is ample. You get full view of the pool to the left of the entrance and then the welcome/reception desk and even a peek at the indoor court. The membership signup was a breeze, the staff was helpful. Flyers of class schedule, pool and gym schedule and other locations are all available by the bulletin stand where you take schedule printouts. I cannot wait to start my early morning classes!
I had my graduation dinner at the center, and we were able to decorate, have food, and enjoy. The staff was very gracious, making sure you had everything you needed. Thank you, Kempsville Rec, such a beautiful facility.
The Kempsville Rec Center was recently closed for maintenance so the shower heads are new. Great pool and resistance pool to walk as well as the walking track on the second floor. The track is unique because it’s painted different colors for different speeds. Work out room on the first floor. I’m a Marine Corps Veteran so I made sure to take a photo of the sign they posted for free admission to Military members on Fridays…great way to test drive the Rec Center before you decide to become a member.
