Flint Repertory Theatre, part of the Flint Institute of Music, runs summer theatre camps through its drama school for students entering 1st grade through graduating seniors. Camps and classes are grouped by grade, with separate acting tracks for grades 7-8 and grades 9-12 and a musical theatre camp for grades 7-12; grade 8 students must have completed Level 2 of The Actor Prepares or pass an audition for certain programs. Courses are built to give students the experiences, techniques and vocabulary needed to work in theatre, and registration runs through the Flint School of Performing Arts portal.

★Patrick MunleyIn their most recent production, Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” the Rep had 12 roles for actors. Instead of lifting up local actors and giving them professional credits and a steady source of income, they hired ten actors from out of town, nine of whom are from out of state (one of whom says they’ve never even been to Michigan in their biography). For those unfamiliar with the Rep’s history, this is only the most recent example of showing contempt for the community it inhabits. Other examples include producing a play on the Water Crisis with the involvement of only one actor from Flint, written by someone from New York. Their history of insulting Flint goes back to their decision to rebrand from the Flint Youth Theater to the Rep. FYT not only hired local talent, but also educated our young people, having them fill roles both on and offstage. FYT was committed to the betterment of our community. What the point of the Rep is, I’ll never know. They seem more committed to hiring carpetbaggers and putting on gimmicky theater that ruins their own stages for the sake of getting in BroadwayWorld. If you care at all about the culture of Flint, its artists and audiences, do not support this shameful theater.

Nothing to write home about it complain about for front of house things. The entrance is marked with a sandwich board as it looks like the building is a shared space.

★★★★★Ethan DawsonIt's a small quaint theater that makes the play feel more realistic. You are so close to the stage that you literally touch it at some points. The small theater atmosphere makes the emotional scenes in any play that much more intense because you can clearly see the pain on the actor's face and it feels almost as though you are part of the story. I saw their showing of Death of a Salesman and the cast was absolutely fantastic. I have seen plenty of plays in a lot of different places and I think this is my favorite theater I've ever been to. I highly recommend seeing something here!
