The Barton Center

Camp Joslin is an overnight camp on 145 acres in Charlton for boys ages 6 to 16 who have type 1 diabetes, operated by The Barton Center for Diabetes Education. The camp combines recreation with diabetes education and is staffed by a stated 24-hour health care team of resident physicians, nurses and nutritionists, supported by endocrinologists, pediatricians, psychologists and dietitians. One- and two-week sessions run in July and August on the same schedule as the operator's girls' camp three miles away, with a bridge weekend between consecutive sessions. Camperships are awarded on a sliding scale, and a first-time camper scholarship covers a one-week overnight session.

I had so many great experiences here. Having gone there many summers in the 1990s. Hike to heck. Hobo stew. Egg water etc etc.

We rented the Penta Dining Hall at Camp Joslin for a wedding. I truly believe we made the best choice, the venue is wonderful! Lisa is a pleasure to work with, she is very communicative, pleasant, accommodating, helpful, and professional.

I went to this camp for a week, and some parts were fun but the big issue was PROTOCOL. Here, if you have a low blood sugar, they only let you have glucose tablets once every fifteen minutes. Also, if your blood sugar is, say, 107, arrow down, they wouldn’t do anything about it until you hit below 100. This could potentially be dangerous, which is why I gave this review 2 stars.

I went for years and it was all OK until my last year.I remember my last year. The oldest group goes on a field trip to hike Mt. Washington. They didn't have enough room for the whole group. 1 kid couldn't go because of different medical conditions. The other kid didnt want to go because he was bullied. I never found out why I didn't get to go.Why was I excluded?I still don't know. I love hiking. I just wanted to add that notice the camp never replies to bad review. Like they font care because they don't. I also remembered how one of the 3 that didn't go was bullied so he decided not to go. They never did anything about the bullying he went through in the 2 weeks we were there. I actually remember his name but won't use it. I'd like to apologize for my behavior I'm sorry it was inexcusable. In the Summer of 94. Im sorry.

Thank you camp Joslin for making a difference in all the young men that attend. My son looks forward to going every year. I love the fact he can be around other kids going though the same thing. It's nice to have a place for kids to help them learn and under their diabetes better and have fun.
