I’ll get to the point quickly, but a little context matters here. From the outside, we probably fit the typical “yachting” look people might expect in Annapolis. In reality, I’m Native American and my wife is Jewish. Professionally, I’m a CEO and my wife is a partner at a law firm. That doesn’t make us better than anyone else, but I mention it simply to give context and credibility to this review—we’re a young family genuinely looking to join a boating community, not just wander in off the street. When we first stopped by the docks, we met a dock staff member who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He gave us a brief overview of memberships, talked about how the club enjoys bringing in younger members, and mentioned there were sometimes slips available for members under 40. He even showed us some of the sailboats available for members to use. It sounded great and left us excited about the possibility of joining. Fast forward two weeks later, I finally had the chance to return and formally inquire about membership. Unfortunately, the experience this time was completely different. The person I spoke with in the membership office was immediately dismissive and made it clear—without asking a single question about me—that there was essentially no chance I would ever be accepted. The conversation felt unnecessarily hostile from the start. I walked in genuinely excited to begin learning more about sailing and becoming part of the community, but left feeling unwelcome and honestly surprised by how the interaction was handled. It’s disappointing when an organization that initially seems welcoming presents a very different tone when you try to engage more formally. One interaction can shape someone’s perception of a place, and unfortunately this one did. I truly hope my experience was the exception rather than the norm. If others have had more positive experiences here, I’d genuinely be open to hearing them and reconsidering my impression. I’d much rather believe this club is as welcoming as it first appeared. Hard no and would also not recommend.
