CinemaKidz runs week-long filmmaking and media-arts day camps for ages 5-15 in Brooklyn, where campers work in small production teams to write scripts, shoot scenes, edit, design costumes and props, and produce original animated shorts. More than a dozen weekly themes are offered, including stop-motion animation, music production, cooking shows, skateboard filmmaking, and Dungeons & Dragons filmmaking, and each day mixes studio work with outdoor games. He asked for a film-making camp and we could not find one for his age group close to home in NJ so we made the trip into the city for CinemaKidz at the Union Square location. My child had a fantastic time learning the technical and creative aspects of turning his ideas into movies, as well as how to collaborate with others in doing so. The one-week increments were great for fitting this camp in with the rest of his summer schedule, and there was a nice balance between "work" and play. The Film Fest at the end of the week really highlighted each kid's contributions and talents. I was impressed with how well the counselors knew my child after one week with him, and I enjoyed seeing all of the completed projects. The films were all funny and entertaining, and it was clear the kids had the reins in coming up with the ideas, doing the filming, and editing the final product. After day two at CinemaKidz, my child was already telling me that he wanted to attend the camp again next year!
