Children of the Sea
Private
Children of the Sea (Keiki Kai) is a small private swim school in Portland, not a summer camp. Founded in the early 1980s, it teaches group and private swim lessons in a warm 91-degree pool for babies through adults, open year-round with day, afternoon, and evening classes. It offers water-safety swim instruction rather than an enrolled day camp.
The practical details
We list only what the camp itself publishes, and programs change — dates, prices, ages and availability can all move after we check. Confirm the details on the camp’s own website and contact Children of the Sea directly before you register or pay. Last checked August 2026.

Powered by GoogleI’ve had three kids go through Children of the Sea over the last few years and I am endlessly impressed with the organization, every instructor, and how quickly my kids have become safe and proficient swimmers. This is a top tier swim school!
I like that this place is a not a chain swim school. The swim school has great staff. There is a 4:1 ratio for the classes. The children start with 3 classes of swim safety. Then go onto strokes. It took almost 2 years for him to get into strokes where they learn what seems to be closer to what swimming is. This seems a little slow to me but I’m not a swim expert and I trust they know what they’re doing. I rather be too safe than not safe enough. Pricing is fair. Waitlist is a little long but it’s better once you’re apart of the school and not waiting to get in.
We truly love this swim school! From the very beginning, the teachers have been amazing with our son. He started out so little in the parent-tot class and absolutely hated getting his hair wet. With the gentle support and encouragement of the coaches, he has grown so much—now he swims on his own with confidence and joy! Every single coach we’ve met is patient, professional, and kind. They really know how to connect with children and make swimming fun and exciting. The facility itself is always clean and well cared for, which makes us as parents feel so comfortable. We couldn’t be more thankful for the teachers and the care they put into helping kids thrive in the water. Highly recommend!
Both my young children’s water confidence and swimming skills exploded after we switched to lessons from Children of the Sea. The class sizes are kept small so each teacher is able to give plenty of attention to their students which really makes a difference. As we have progressed through the classes we have worked with a number of different teachers and every one of them has been excellent. The building is family oriented and designed so getting kids in and out of their swim gear is simple. They also loaned me a spare towel on a week I had forgotten them. Their classes fill up quickly so if you have a child that is close to being ready to start, get on the wait list early.
Love the new facility! Very clean and spacious! The kids love the warm water which for some reason swim schools in Portland just cannot figure out what an asset that is. Only issues we have with children of the sea is the demand is really high and they baby the kids too much. The teaching philosophy is good but they need to be a little more aggressive on letting the child become more self sufficient. In Arizona we went to gold medal swim in Tempe and our then 2 year could jump off the sides into the water with street clothes and find the wall. They did not baby children due to the high number of drowning in Arizona. Children of the sea needs to realize that children are resilient and need to be pushed. Our then 3 year could swim independently and backstroke 25m. Our current 3 year is not remotely close to doing so here.
