The Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning is the South Bronx flagship of nonprofit New York Junior Tennis & Learning and runs summer tennis camp across 11 one-week sessions from June 8 to August 21. The Tennis Plus program for ages 5-12 pairs daily tennis instruction, grouped by age and ability, with a rotating sport of the day, off-court games and fitness, running 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with free late pick-up until 5:00 PM. A separate competitive track for ages 11-18 runs 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and adds daily strength and conditioning, match play and off-court match charting for high school and college prep. Weeks are purchased individually, with sibling and early-bird discounts and Friday pizza and team competition.

However, the program director Asha has unnecessary attitude and doesn’t organize levels appropriately unless she knows you, or you’re a regular. Also the pros should at least pretend to be enthusiastic, a drab bunch. Been here a few times, for games and the clinic, won’t be going back, solely because of the director, it’s just not worth the trip.

Free community classes for Bronx residents, including some kids classes offered through New Your Junior Tennis League! Cary Leeds, is also right next to the 10 Cortona Park public (free) tennis courts. So when the weather is nice there are 22 courts (10 free, 12 paid). A great place to meet other players, find a phenomenal coach or get your kids playing tennis.
