My friends and I organized a small women’s retreat to Camp El-O-Win for one of their last weekends of the season. The camp was easy to find with clearly marked signs to the camp just off Dinkey Creek Road. Upon arrival, the wonderful women looking after the camp made sure to give us any last pointers about our stay. We booked a couple cabins in the Arapaho unit with fresh running water. There was an accessible “biffy” (bathroom in forest for you) near by. Everything was so clean and the space felt so relaxing for our little retreat! Our A-frame cabins had cots with mattresses which made for one of my most comfortable camping trips to date! There is no kitchen available, so we had a lot of fun making our own food on the portable stoves we brought. However, the fire pits do have over-fire racks that we used to heat up our tri-tip. One of the most convenient parts was that Camp El-O-Win provided all firewood! The awesome new bear boxes were big enough to put our ice chest in. After bringing our own equipment and having fresh running water in our campsite, our food preparation was as good as any kitchen (only better because it was outdoors!) We made sure to bear-box all our food, scented items, and trash to protect wildlife. At the end of summer the creeks always slow down, but there was still a little stream of water for us to dip our feet in when we stayed at the end of September. Very refreshing! We explored Camp El-O-Win one morning and found some nice shaded tables on the other side of the bridge to sit and chat. Later in the day, we took the 20 minute drive back to Shaver to hang out at the lake and have dinner at a restaurant and restock our ice chest with fresh ice, but we couldn’t wait to return to our camp and get a camp fire going. When we returned, we found a brand new roll of paper towels with a nice note that one of the camp staff wrote after our own paper towel roll fell in the dirt while we were gone. That was so nice of them!! This camp has so much to offer. The staff takes good care of the grounds and its visitors. Our group is already thinking about when we can book next summer. I was a CIT here in 1997. Such a wonderful camp with great memories of a lifetime!!! I wish my daughter's camp in NV had more of what El-O-Win offers. Maybe in a few more years she can attend El-O-Win.
