Bowfish Studios at 956 Asbury Avenue in Ocean City is a children's salon and creative-experience studio that runs a Mermaid Day Camp and Mermaid Boot Camp in summer. Campers take mermaid-tail swimming lessons, use paddleboards, and do painting, crafts and hair braiding; the studio bills it as the only mermaid camp in Ocean City. Outside camp the studio does themed makeovers, ear piercing and parties; camp ages, session length and dates are not published.

★M (MM)We recently attended a birthday party here and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. I’ve shopped in the store before and always felt the atmosphere was a bit unwelcoming, but I brushed it off since it’s a boutique and expected a certain vibe. At the party, some of the girls had their hair done - even though it wasn’t part of the party package. Naturally, my daughter noticed and wanted hers done too. I politely asked if it would be possible to have her hair done afterward and was told no because “it wouldn’t be fair.” That response was frustrating. From a parent’s perspective, it actually created the opposite situation - my child felt left out watching others receive a service she was not allowed to have, even when I was willing to pay for it. I understand policies are important, but flexibility in situations like this - especially involving children - would go a long way. If a service is being offered to some kids during an event, it should at least be available to others upon request. I hope the business rethinks how they handle situations like this in the future. A more inclusive and accommodating approach would make a big difference in the overall experience.
