Barnegat Light Yacht Club, on Long Beach Island since the 1930s, runs a summer Youth Program of sailing and swimming classes plus social events for children aged 5-18. Sailing is taught in graded classes: Optimist 1 for sailors 8 and older, then Optimist 2 and 3 for those progressing, Sunfish for sailors 12 and over with a summer of sailing behind them, and Club 420 for confident sailors at least 12 years old and 100 lbs who are interested in racing. The season runs as two sessions, roughly 22 June to 17 July and 20 July to 14 August.
