YMCA Camp Ihduhapi

Last summer was our first time at any YMCA camp, and it was less than a good experience. Things seemed disorganized, there was a medical emergency shut down that closed the camp early that wasn't communicated or handled well, and while my kiddo had an enjoyable time their highlights of the camp were their main counselor talking to her boyfriend on FaceTime back home and having lots of "boys and marriage" discussions which is inappropriate and not what we sent her to camp for. We plan to try again one last time this summer as we were encouraged to by a former counselor. Beyond camp itself, registering and paying is a total nightmare. Customer service can never help and sends me in circles. The payments don't credit right on my account and I cannot get any help fixing it. Customer service just hasn't responded to me in a month now. Last year, they blamed me for not knowing how to use their website only to find out their website was not set up right after months of back and forth. No apologies, no help, nothing but issues.

We have attended YMCA camps for the past 5 summers. We previous attended YMCA Camp Manitou overnight camp in Wisconsin and decided to stick closer to home and try Camp Iduhapi. When we toured, the grounds were unkept with weeds growing through the staircases and the areas around the cabins were not landscaped appropriately to ensure kids are safe from trip hazards and knowing where the paths were, etc. I thought possibly the camp just hadn't done maintenance prior to our tour. However, the counselor touring us, stated that no more maintenance needed to be done. The lake that the camp utilizes is FULL of weeds. We toured in early summer and the weed growth was significant. I asked where the kids swim and the counselor confirmed, it's a very weedy lake. The dock needed repairs and it was not sturdy--another area that needed attention. After attending camp and having added the horseback riding option for additional money, we were disappointed that the kids did not ride much and despite my daughter's previous equine experience (which has been since birth being around horses and lots of classes), she was treated like a toddler. It just made the experience not as fun for her. Her cabin was required by the counselor to shower three nights in a row, and they missed the fun of joining in the whole-camp campfire they do where they tell stories, make s'mores and make memories with their peers. We talked with YMCA leadership about this after we were prompted for follow-up. Because of the facilities being so dated and not kept up along with the attitude of the counselors, we've decided it's not the best fit for what we're looking for in a camp. Iduhapi is night and day different from YMCA Camp Manitou in Wisconsin. The culture and environment with the counselors is night/day different and the facilities are well-kept with a sand-bottom lake that is much more fun for little kiddos.

I tried to post a review yesterday but don't see it. I first attended Camp Ihduhapi in either 1951 or 1952. I was born in 1943 and this was my first stay overnight camp. I came back several times and loved each visit. I still remember the name of my first camp counselor - Dewey. I will be 80 next month so I'm guessing Dewey may have passed but there is no way to know. I am attaching a photo of the first group of campers along with Dewey,

Our kids love it here! They offer so many different types of camps. Climbing, sailing, archery, horseback riding and so much more! We have four kids and they are exhausted when we pick them up. I would highly recommend to register for camps early at the beginning of each year as they fill up extremely fast. It’s convenient too because we can drop the kids off at local elementary schools in Maple Grove and a bus picks them up and drops them back off. I would certainly recommend!

YMCA Camp Ihduhapi is one of the greatest places in the world! The experiences that the counselors are able to provide for the children (both day camp & overnight camp) are priceless. The memories made, and the friendships Forged over the shared adventures are some that will last a life time. Another note, team building activities that are also provided at this facility are great also! Whether you're hoping to develop relationships amongst co-workers, classmates, or even family; the Ihduhapi team is great.
