The Virginia Space Grant Consortium runs free NASA-affiliated STEM programs for Virginia students, headquartered in Hampton. Its high school scholars programs pair an online course during the academic year with a week-long residential academy at a NASA centre for top performers: Virginia Space Coast Scholars for 10th graders at NASA Wallops Flight Facility, and Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars and Virginia Earth System Science Scholars for 11th and 12th graders at NASA Langley. Academy scholars undertake a teamed aerospace mission-design project and are provided transportation, housing and meals. Entry is selective rather than open enrollment - Space Coast Scholars requires Virginia residency, sophomore standing, a 2.7 minimum GPA and US citizenship, with the top 120 scholars statewide invited to the seven-day academy. The consortium also runs BLAST for 7th-9th graders and Technology Exploration Saturdays.
