Virginia Repertory Theatre is a Richmond nonprofit professional theater whose education arm runs summer day camps for students in grades K-12, taught by Virginia theater artists and educators and designed for both first-timers and experienced performers. Stage Explorers, for rising 1st-8th graders, mixes drama, music, dance and a production craft each day with campers grouped by grade level, coming together for a showcase performance. Older students can choose Spotlights (rising 6th-12th), which focuses on audition packages, dance calls and professional self-marketing; the Young Performers Institute (rising 7th-12th), which rotates through performance courses; or Summer Showtime, an audition or apprenticeship camp staging Matilda Jr. over August 3-14. ★★★★★Meredith loves RVAWe recently saw The Cottage at Hanover Tavern. Seats were comfortable, set lovely and interesting with lighting and sound on point. The theater is cool and intimate. While all these things are true, the performers were fantastic and could have put on an amazing show in a white walled, empty room. Every performer played their role perfectly. We laughed a lot and thought it to be the ideal performance until Act II when Joshua Mullins came on as “Richard”. His addition elevated things to another level. His expressions alone made for great mirth. While he could have easily been a scene stealer, his addition elevated the ensemble to perfection. We’ll definitely return to this hidden gem venue. It is an alternative to the traditional Richmond venues with ample, free parking, easy highway access, on site dining and history galore. I can’t wait to return and am checking out additional dates for The Cottage.

Our seats were the last available and as far from center stage as possible, but the experience was still very enjoyable with a clear view of the stage. Additionally, I was impressed that a small theater still offered audio stage descriptions for those with visual impairments to fully enjoy the production.

The theater is beautiful and has a lot of charm, and the employees were very friendly. The initmate setting makes every seat enjoyable. I would definitely return in the future to see more shows!
