To start, I signed up for ASA-101 through The Sailing School. What an excellent experience. Two days out on the water with a licensed, experienced Captain. It was windy, so we went out on a 33 foot Hunter sailboat. This is exactly the size and style of boat I am looking to buy, so to get real hands on experience on it was priceless. The class is two full (consecutive) days. About two hours of slides (classroom training), and the rest is on the water crewing the boat. There is a 100 question exam at the end of day two. All-in-all it is a great experience. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in sailing, or even if you want to simply try it out. It is well worth the cost.

We sailed a 22-foot Catalina around the Delaware River, practicing all the exercises with an experienced ASA-certified instructor. The course includes a 100-page instruction book, which was well-written with many illustrations. It was a little intimidating but everything came together when actually sailing with the instructor. We all passed the course! I look forward to renting mid-sized sailboats and more sailing adventures. If you want to learn sailing, take this course!
