The Actors Gymnasium is a circus and performing arts training center in Evanston that runs immersive summer circus day camps for incoming 4th graders and older, weekdays 9am-4pm. Each day opens with a warm-up, then training and workshops in circus, drama and movement: campers learn juggling, tumbling, trapeze, tightwire, stilts, acrobatics and aerial skills, and no prior experience is required. Camps are sold in one-week, two-week and four-week sessions across June, July and August, and payment plans and financial aid are available. Instruction is led by Artistic Director Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi, a second-generation circus performer inducted with The Hernandez Troupe into the Circus Ring of Fame in 2019.

★★★Rachel DanielPros: The staff and the gym space are very nice. It’s a welcoming environment. Cons: In my opinion, you do not get your money’s worth for the experience. The cost of one class is three times what I used to pay for an aerial class, and I only had about 30 minutes of time on the silk here versus the hour and a half I had at my old studio. The class also seems more geared towards professional aerialists, not beginner or intermediate. That being said I will be giving them another try just to be sure I didn’t have an outlier class, but I had been hoping for more.
