Stafford Soccer - VA's Premier Soccer Club

The politics within this club are hard to ignore. Many of the coaches are also teachers within Stafford County Schools, and it often feels like their children receive preferential treatment on travel teams. It is difficult not to notice that certain players, including those connected to county school leadership, along with the club, consistently end up in prominent roles (like team captain) regardless of skill or aptitude; creating an environment where other children feel excluded, at times bullied by aforementioned children with no repercussions. The club promotes player development under licensed coaches, yet several travel coaches do not appear to meet even a basic C license standard. The overall philosophy seems less focused on building competitive, winning teams and more on making everyone feel good, which creates a disconnect when teams are consistently losing. There have also been instances of unprofessional behavior from coaches that raise concerns about the environment being set for players; i.e., favoritism, under coaching, degrading, the list goes on. Take a look at the technical staff: they absolutely do not embody athleticism or physical fitness whatsoever. From our experience, the coaching style has been heavily defensive with little emphasis on developing attacking play. At the same time, the club appears to lose strong, qualified coaches to other programs, which only reinforces concerns about its direction and priorities. Many skilled players have also sought training elsewhere. For families considering the cost, which can exceed two thousand dollars per year, it is worth carefully evaluating whether this program aligns with your expectations for development and competitive growth. This is a club that prides itself on a maximum of D3 growth; verbally explaining (during college night) that players who play here will never meet the D1 level. Club leadership should take a deeper look into what’s happening versus simply collecting a paycheck. It’s truly unfortunate: Stafford Soccer has the ability to be a “premier” club in the region, but unfortunately, is the laughingstock of northern and central Virginia.

Warning to parents: Stafford Soccer does not provide on-field supervision during games. When play gets overly physical, the league’s response is that referees are managed by an independent association, not by them. As others have mentioned, you won’t know your practice days or locations until after you’ve paid, and refunds aren’t offered. If your player is looking to develop more advanced skills, you may want to invest in private training or consider a different league. In response: Thank you for the reply. Many youth sports programs do provide on-site staff supervision in addition to referees, and parents reasonably expect clubs to take responsibility for the environment children play in—not defer safety concerns elsewhere. I also offered to meet in person, and those requests were declined. My experience reflects concerns noted by other parents, so I’m sharing this to provide additional context for families.

Do not sign up for Stafford Soccer unless your schedule allows for practices to be any day of the week. They were not responsive about changing teams and do not give refunds if the practice days they assign don't work for you.

This is a bad environment, and terrible coaches. Don’t trust and send your kids to this club. My son had soccer tryouts with this club. He tried two times and lost all his two balls as they told the players support to bring their own balls. My son talked to the coach but he did not care. The coach just pointed him somewhere to find, even the ball not there, it was token by someone. I saw my son kept walking around the field to find his balls. I was very upset about the coach, ashamed on how he treated the kid like that. My son was very sad and felt bad since the new ball was bought a few days after he lost his ball on the first tryout, and he then lost the new one after the second tryout. Stay away from this club. IT IS NOT SAFE.

My daughter loves her time with stafford soccer! We have participated in U5 stars and U6 Recreation so far and it’s very well organized. My son is a volunteer Buddy for their TOPSOCCER program, for players with special needs. It's been a great experience overall! Both of my children have made friends and used up all of that kid energy while learning new skills. This is worth every penny, and isn’t expensive compared to other activities. It’s free to volunteer and is a great way for students to gain volunteer hours credits!
