Would have given 5 stars, but my one and only true complaint is this.. I've been a member on and off for the past 12 years.. through my experience it seems like the "basketball crowd" has been slowly being pushed out. There used to be 4 full courts, then went down to 3 for the ninja run. They got rid of that and turned 2 courts into a full gymnastics setup. 1 court is used strictly for pickelball and the last court is used for organized games, classes or practices leaving the basketball crowd to a open court once every blue moon when nothing is scheduled. I personally feel like there's more to it but it is what it is. I've gotten older and mostly focus on my workout and I go work on my game outside at my local park depending on the weather. It's not ideal, especially when I initially signed up, the 4 courts were a selling point. At this point for me and others who feel the same, the individual membership price is tad bit high compared to other gyms without a basketball court. But considering my loyalty and location convenience of this Ymca, i'm content, especially given that it has a very good community and a great staff as well. I know there is cheaper options out there that open and close later, but to be honest I continue going to this specific one for a complete peace of mind while I workout. I've been to other gyms locally and the vibes just don't compare.
My 3 year old is in the preschool gymnastics class and it is a great program to get younger kids moving and also build the foundational gymnastics skills needed for the older classes. The preschool class also helps the kids get practice listening and taking turns. Ms. Lindsey is so great and patient with the younger kids, even while they are sometimes having trouble with these skills.
Our family absolutely loves the Plaistow YMCA! It’s become such a special part of our routine. I can drop my kids off at Kids Club (which they love), then head to the gym for a workout or one of the amazing included classes. Spin class with Maggie is my personal favorite she’s the best! The child care staff are so great with the kids, and I always feel at ease knowing they’re in good hands. My daughter recently started at Kelly Brook Camp and she’s having the time of her life. She never wants to leave! We’ve also been doing the parent and child gymnastics class with my youngest and it’s been such a fun bonding activity.Only suggestion is Plaistow Y NEEDS NEEDS NEEDS A POOL! That would make this already amazing place even better!
The staff is personable and very helpful. Yesterday was my first workout after 10 child bearing years, and Wendy was amazing. I went to the Fit For Life class and it was perfect for a beginner like me. She helped me increase the intensity of my personal workout, without disrupting the class at all and made it a whole lot of fun! Looking forward to my next class. Also, being able to let my girls play at Kids Club so that I can focus on my workout was such a relief and helpful. They had fun with the other kids! My 2 year old daughter started gymnastics this week and she absolutely loved it!
