Middlesex Family YMCA
Private
Summer day camp at the Middlesex Family YMCA in Hartfield, a branch of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas. Campers ages 5 to 12 swim, do arts and crafts and drama, and take themed field trips, on a schedule built around working parents' hours; the branch also runs after-school care and spring and winter break camps. Financial assistance for low-income families is available through the Y's Guardian Program, applied for at the branch before camp registration.

Powered by GoogleLast Friday, there was an incident that occurred involving my 4 year old at our local YMCA, while under the care of their childcare center. My child and another child were playing well together and then the other child decided she did not want to play with my child, which would have been fine but she decided to say out loud and I quote " I do not want to play with black people." I was not alerted of the situation until 11:15 AM when I went to pick up my child up from child care. I was told this situation was under investigation and someone would be in contact with me about the issue. I was contacted over the weekend. I expressed how this statement that was made was racist and disgusting. That it 100% is something that is being taught in their household and it shouldn't be taken lightly or tolerated. I simply suggested that a suspension or some type of disciplinary action should be implemented. I was told that they would look into their policy and get back to me. I also requested if nothing else the child should apologize to my child and I should get an apology from the parents upon a meeting about the incident. I was just contacted by the Y and was basically told that all they can do it record the incident on an incident report and upon the next occurrence, their membership will be terminated. Am I crazy for feeling like this isn't enough? Like this child did not learn a lesson at all. Why would you want that to happen to another child? What about my child's feelings? What about my feelings? What that child said to my child was RACIST and she should have at least been suspended for a few days, instead of that she was welcomed right back in the facility on Monday morning. I'm extremely disappointed in their decision on this matter and I have cancelled my membership. If you are allowing your members to make racist remarks in your facility and not taking it seriously then you are part of the problem and not the solution. YMCA will not get another dime from me or my family. I will gladly drive to another gym that cares about all of their members and not just specific ones. Signed a mother who does not play about her children.
Poorly ran. Rude and nasty employees. I would not let my children attend their summer and after school programs.
Nathan, the Saturday yoga instructor is a gem! We are grateful and honored to have him as our teacher! Namaste!!
