Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club, established in 1905, runs junior sailing instruction on New Jersey's largest lake, open to members and non-members alike, with lessons running from the last week of June to the third week of August. It teaches at every level of interest and ability: many beginners start as young as seven, a beginners' class aimed at teenagers has proved popular in recent years, and there are racing classes as well as classes for children who do not want to compete. Sailing is taught in club and member-owned Optimist dinghies, with older children using their own Lasers, and experienced sailors follow US Sailing Optimist fleet guidelines through the Green, White, Blue and Red fleets by age and experience. A Saturday morning program is offered to member children at beginner and intermediate level.
