The Kenan Center is a nonprofit arts, education and recreation campus in Lockport with a year-round art gallery, a restored carriage house theatre, a sports arena, gardens and a playground across 25 acres. Its Daisy's Summer Day Camp is a whole-child program built around arts, culture, recreation, education and sports, mixing creative work, active play, hands-on learning and unstructured time. The camp runs nine weeks from June 29 to August 28, Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:30pm, for children entering grades 1 through 7, at $250 per week including breakfast and lunch. Enrollment is capped at 48 children per week with an 8:1 counselor-to-camper ratio, and financial aid is available.

Their ability to cross the ages with programming tha is both fun and education is an asset to Lockport. From the first time I was the Book Fairy the Peter Rabbit Tea, to Winterfest and lending a hand with dinner theater in Irish Garb or pour beer for the beer and wine fest everyone I worked with was a delight. They are like extended family. Their commitment to the City is shown in the new building that they worked so hard to raise funds for for so long and its finally happening. What a time to watch where they go next.
★Blake LemoiCharging an entry fee for a “community” nonprofit event creates unnecessary socioeconomic barriers and hurts the very vendors it’s supposed to support. Multiple vendors said foot traffic was slow — when people have to pay just to walk in, fewer come, fewer shop, and vendors lose out. Nonprofits should be partnering with vendors to help them thrive, not putting a toll booth at the door.
