Took ASA101 at ISC–lovely experience! Within an hour of signing up (on a Saturday, no less), Elias at the club called to welcome me and ensure I had any questions answered. Instructors John and Berry were knowledgeable, courteous, and friendly. They smartly adjusted our testing schedule on the fly to work with the weather. The boat was clean and in excellent mechanical condition all round. Comfortable, down to earth club house. Everyone in the class, who were of widely varying knowledge and skill levels, got to know each other over the four days, and I came away with new sailing friends. Overall vibe was one of open welcome and the best of team spirit. Would recommend without reservation to any aspiring sailor.

Before I started this course, I'd only ever set foot on a sailboat once. Now, I feel confident taking on any crew position. The instructors are thorough and observant, tailoring instruction to our individual needs, and noticing quickly where each student can improve. During our on-the-water training, we encountered incredibly strong sustained winds, even stronger gusts, direction changes, large vessels on a collision course, and giant wakes from said vessels. But because of the skills and insights of our instructors, I never felt unsafe, or like we couldn't handle the situation. This course has cemented in me a love of sailing, and the confidence to handle any small vessel. I can already feel the trajectory of my hobbies shifting, and I know I'll be spending a lot more time on the water now. I expect that when I look back on this time of my life, I'll recognize this course as a life-changing event. If you have any interest at all in sailing, I cannot recommend this course enough.

Absolutely wonderful school and organization! My wife and I just finished our first sailing class (ASA 101) at Island Sailing School which was taught by Spencer Matthaei over 4 days. I can not say enough good things about the school overall, and Spencer (as a teacher) in particular. The attention to detail, the excellence of the teaching, the availability of sailboats, the pricing of membership, and the warm vibrant community is unique. Absolutely wonderful!

My husband and I just finished the 101 class and it was wonderful! Everyone was very friendly, our instructor Rick was patient and thorough, and the owner Stephan is very welcoming and enthusiastic about sharing sailing. We’re looking forward to more sails with Island Sailing and getting more experience!

I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive experience with Island Sailing Club. I’d wanted to learn to sail for years, but felt daunted by the learning curve. I had never sailed. I didn’t have a boat, or even a truck to haul a boat. I didn’t have anyone else in my life that sailed. I’m a middle aged mom- not exactly a shoe-in to the sailing lifestyle. The owner, Stephen, has created something really special- a culture where an absolute beginner like me can walk onto the dock to find a fleet of immaculately maintained boats, great teachers, a community of sailors, lots of support and encouragement, and just…sail. I took the ASA 101 Sailing course with Mark- a 3 day beginners course. He was an excellent teacher- astute, experienced, and patient. I’ve since joined the sailing club- which comes with a wide range of boats with a convenient app for scheduling, and an online forum in which to meet other sailing buddies. Within the span of 3 months I went from never having sailed before to taking my family out and teaching my boy sailors knots. Island Sailing Club makes sailing accessible, attainable, downright fun, and always safe. I can’t wait to keep up with it and learn for years.
