Sail2Change is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving historically under-served and under-represented youth across Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, and everything it offers youth is free of charge. Its Access Maritime Program is an immersive four-week summer program - two weeks learning to sail, then two weeks backpacking in the wilderness - after which each student is paired with a trained mentor for the following school year, with monthly educational events continuing through the year. Founded in 2018, it works with students seeking support for emotional and behavioral complications, low academic performance, or disconnection from traditional school, and aims to build a pipeline into maritime and marine science careers through job shadowing and internships. Participation is by application rather than open enrollment.
