Essex Bay Sailing Club teaches children ages 8 and up to sail within the sheltered Essex River estuary at Conomo Point, alongside the fundamentals of boating safety, navigation, weather awareness and seamanship. Beginning and intermediate sailors learn in 12-foot Escape Captivas, while more experienced sailors move into an introductory racing program using Captivas and Club 420s. Children enroll in four- or eight-week sessions, and the club's stated mission is to raise sailors who both know the sport and appreciate and protect the Essex River; instructors are program alumni who came up through its Bosun-to-Admiral levels.
