City of Manhattan Parks and Recreation

This past Monday I was at the Douglas Center in the morning playing Pickleball. While there, there was a situation that occurred that the single young lady working there had to deal with alone who also called the police to deal with the man causing an issue. I feel that each center should always have at least two people working so if an issue occurs there isn’t just one employee to deal with an issue that occurs. Today, Wednesday there were about 20 people that came to play Pickleball in the morning on the two courts that the Douglas Center has. We all believed that PB has the two courts until noon. We were told that someone reserved one court to practice volleyball. Why couldn’t they have been told to reserve courts at Anthony or Eisenhower in the morning at 9:50 or in the afternoon at Douglas? Twenty people trying to play PB on one court is unfair especially when we weren’t given notice.

This review is specifically for my experience with the recreation coordinator Ramsey. She reached out to us to help us navigate a soccer class we wanted to enroll our son in. She was so especially kind, had excellent communication and helped us get everything set up for our son this spring. I am truly grateful for her help in getting our son into soccer this spring, and for simply being a kind person.

I went to this ice skating rink for the first time today. The parking lot is very small and difficult to park. The navigation system in my car didn't guide me to the parking space well. The entrance door is small. Once inside, on the right side, there is a window to pay the entrance fee and a window to rent skates. The people in this area are very friendly. I told them that one of the skates I rented was not in good condition and my feet hurt right away, so I asked for a replacement and they gladly gave it to me. The skating rink here has a lot more very young children than other skating rinks in the area. It filled up quickly and was very crowded in the evenings.

We have had a wonderful experience with parks and rec dance classes! The teachers are wonderful and my kids love participating! Additionally, having lived in many communities around the country, the parks, playgrounds and pools here in MHK are fabulous!

I am thankful for all of the cool opportunities available to my kids. We love the arts in the park on Tuesdays, the little house in city park, the beautiful playgrounds and 3 pools all over town. We have enjoyed dance classes here more than at some of the big studios in town, the spring break soccer camp, swim lessons, tball, and so much more. I have 4 kids schedules to plan and so I sometimes wish the organization was a little better, but good people seem to work here and they are responsive to phone messages and concerns I have voiced (from rescheduling rain dates to feedback about the new summer play program). I very much appreciate the time and energy that goes into such massive event and program planning and will continue to enjoy our family time with parks and rec...everything they offer is an enhancement to the Manhattan community.
