Camp Old Indian, near Travelers Rest, is the Blue Ridge Council's flagship Scouts BSA overnight summer camp, set on about 550 acres in the Blue Ridge foothills with three lakes and seven miles of trails. Its four weeks of summer camp offer swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, climbing, zip lines, and merit-badge programs, with Adirondack shelters, cabins, and tent options. 2026 marks its 100th anniversary.

★Jennifer TuckerBEWARE OF NEW CAMP DIRECTOR!!! My son attended the first week of summer camp 2026. The biggest concern I have is the behavior of the new camp director, Charlie. Several children & teens who attended told me that anytime anyone would complain to Charlie, he would gather the staff at night and yell at them (verbally abusing 18-21year olds). I spoke with troop leaders who informed me that the old camp director was terminated & over half of the staff left with him, leaving several classes without certified educators. Charlie urged the classes to be taught by uncertified staff & risked the safety of all campers. The most common complaint I heard was about the food. It’s never good, but this year was especially bad. They serve bread that’s rock hard, eggs that you have to peel the top layer of gunky crust off of, but they made sure to serve much better quality food for family night in an attempt to misguide the parents about the treatment and care for their children. The most shocking complaint I heard was about the camp store literally catching on fire with people inside it, and Charlie didn’t report that incident to anyone or warn any campers. Charlie’s lack of accountability is disgusting. He blames 18-21 year old staff members for his bad policies, ideas, and shortcomings. I am appalled that I just paid almost $500 for this experience. Last year was amazing, I would have rated it 5 stars. I kept asking people what happened? And the only answer I received was that, the council in control of this camp wouldn’t listen to the old camp director, JD, because he was advising that their purposed policies wouldn’t work, so they replaced him with Charlie because he would implement the policies they wanted him to. It seems like it’s a systemic issue, and until a new director is appointed, or JD is brought back, I don’t trust them to take care of my son or monitor his safety.

★★★★★Britt HelmsI just returned from a week at Camp Old Indian with my troop. It was probably the rainiest summer camp I've ever attended in 50+ years of scouting. In spite of the weather, the program continued (where possible) and staff moral was high throughout the week. Food was good with some slight exceptions. They work hard to accommodate special dietary needs. We had NO homesick issues at this camp, which says a lot. We had a girl troop in camp this week and they never expressed any facility issues and they rocked several of the troop competitions against the boys. They have a nice leader lounge and WiFi is available for purchase, but is currently expensive. There were troops in camp from Florida and Louisiana while we were there, and they seemed to have a great time and related that it was worth the drive for their scouts.
