Camp DeBruce
New York Department of Environmental Conservation Summer Camps
Camp DeBruce is one of four residential summer camps run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in the Catskills near Livingston Manor. It is the longest-running of the DEC camps and sits within walking distance of trout streams, the Catskill Fish Hatchery and Mongaup Pond, where fly fishing remains a popular activity. Campers spend a Sunday-to-Friday week on hands-on field ecology and outdoor skills including fishing, birding, fly-tying, archery, canoeing, hiking, camping, orienteering and hunter safety education. Weeks are age-grouped, with ages 11–13 in weeks 1–4 and 7 and ages 14–17 in weeks 5–6. A one-week session costs $350 including all meals, trips and a camp t-shirt, an EMT or nurse is on site at all times, and the Sullivan County Department of Health requires proof of specified vaccinations or a valid medical exemption for this camp.

EDIT: Since this review was originally written I also got the chance to serve as a Volunteer for 4 years. This Camp made me the person I am today. It gave me the courage to be myself, and gave me my love for the environment that has encouraged me to get my degree. I unfortunately have not had the chance to serve on staff, with the camp season being cancelled the past two years, but I look forward to hopefully being able to serve as a Counselor this year.
