Brown Ledge is a residential camp for girls ages 10-17 on Malletts Bay of Lake Champlain in Colchester, Vermont, running since 1926 on a 'freedom of choice' philosophy that lets campers build their own daily schedules. About 180 campers each summer choose from an elective program centered on horseback riding, theater arts, waterfront and field sports, riflery, archery, and dance, in four- and eight-week sessions.

Powered by GoogleI went to Brown Ledge for a total of 10 years, spending time as a camper, junior counselor and counselor. My mom and aunt went to Brown Ledge as well. I can't speak highly enough of my time spent there. The way Brown Ledge is built to give the girls so much independence is incredibly unique and helps teach and build so many important life skills. My time at camp was incredibly special and I continue to stay connected with friends from there and go back to visit during alumni camp.
My daughter is about to enter her 6th year at Brown Ledge. While there are so many big "camp" experiences that make Brown Ledge so special, I feel it is the smaller, quieter moments that have truly supported her growth along the way. She has met incredible friends, JC's and counselors over the years and considers them family. It is important to note that MANY of these people have returned to Brown Ledge year after year. This is such a wonderful indicator to the health of the camp and how it makes people feel. We also love the fact that campers build their own schedules. There is less of an emphasis on sports and competition and a greater emphasis on exploring your passion and finding JOY. My daughter has been involved in the theater program for many years and the productions are incredible! Finally, the camp location is STUNNING. Unlike many camps, Brown Ledge is unique in that it is situated in a quiet bay on Lake Champlain AND it is 20 minutes from Burlington and many other Vermont staples. My daughter is returning this summer for all 8 weeks and she can't wait!
Camp Brown Ledge gave my daughter the most amazing summer experience. She attended the 4-week program and loved it so much that on the very first day we visited her after the 14-day mark, she was already asking to stay for the entire summer next year. The drama program was incredible, and she became absolutely inseparable with her bunkmates. Months later, they’re still talking regularly and already planning to return together. She also tried new activities—like horseback riding—and loved the freedom the camp gives the kids to create their own day and follow what interests them. There’s truly no shortage of things to do. As a parent, I appreciated how attentive and mature the staff were. The camp is run by actual adults rather than teens, and the leadership is impressive. My daughter felt completely safe, supported, and encouraged the whole time. We also loved that we could visit after the 14-day mark and even take her out for the day. We couldn’t be happier with Camp Brown Ledge. It’s a special place, and my daughter can’t wait to go back.
Sleepaway camp is something that one can dream about being the best years of their lives. There is such a place. It's called Brown Ledge. I attended for 5 blissful summers in the 80s. It changed the entire course of my life for the better. So much so that now, my own daughter finds her own happy place there each summer. There's just something extraordinary about being on Lake Champlain surrounded by the beauty and excitement that camp has to offer. The community, the activities, the feeling of accomplishment, the independent structure, the extensive songs that are sung every week, the diversity, the companionship, the counselors, the iconic rings that we proudly wear on our fingers...all of these are more are what make up the magic that is Brown Ledge. I couldn't recommend BLC more. My daughter and I just got back from spending Thanksgiving in NYC where we visited with my best friend and bunkie and her two daughters, one of them being my daughter's junior counselor. These relationships last forever. 30+ years, I still think about camp every single day. "All is well with the camp you love."
My two daughters attend this camp. It’s my older daughter’s 5th summer there & my younger daughter’s 4th. It can be challenging, especially at first, but we’ve learned “we can do hard things!” This camp gives young girls an opportunity to practice independence before college. At BLC, girls make their own choices daily, pursue their own activities, set their own goals for excellence (or not!). They can take their space (or yield it), forge their own friendships, work out their own fears & social conflicts, figure out how to advocate for themselves, and just learn how to show up & be themselves authentically. They consistently have come home walking taller, and feeling “seen” in a whole new way. They have learned to navigate social dynamics without dependence on grownups. They have made dear friendships, that I hope will be lifelong. We are all so thankful for BLC!
