Airfield 4-H Center is the host site for 4-H Junior Camp, an overnight camp for ages 9 to 13 on a 285-acre property beside Airfield Lake in Wakefield, serving 16 localities in southeastern Virginia. Campers choose from hands-on classes offered each morning that have included archery, rifle and shotgun, canoeing and kayaking, outdoor living skills, nature and forestry, a high ropes challenge course, pond ecology and fishing, beekeeping, gardening, leathercraft, baking, beginner and advanced swimming, STEM-aerospace, forensic science and performing arts, with afternoon and evening recreation and traditional campfires. The center runs eight weeks of sleep-over camp each season for more than 1,600 children and teens, about 210 per week, and also offers specialty camps including Cloverbud for ages 5 to 8, Shooting Education for 9 to 17 and Horse Camp for 9 to 18. It is a nonprofit Virginia Cooperative Extension center and is ACA-accredited.
