The Academy of Dance & Gymnastics has taught dance and gymnastics on the Peninsula for about forty years and runs three studios, in Newport News, Hampton and Yorktown; this is the Hampton location on W. Mercury Blvd. It serves ages 2½ to 18 from beginner through advanced and professional levels in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, musical theatre, pointe and gymnastics, and fields a competitive dance team. Its summer offering is a six-week class session running June 29 to August 6, with registration June 2 to July 2, rather than a camp.

My granddaughter's been going to ballet and gymnastics for the past few months and does she love it Great school great instructors
100% would not recommend this yorktown studio to ANYONE! The only reason they have good reviews is because they hide and delete the poor ones. . Completely disgusting. You didnt have a problem owning up to, BULLYING and DISCRIMINATING Againist a toddler with a disability In the moment but you can't own up to it now and instead have the Audacity to HIDE it. You are cruel. I will never recommend anyone to this studio. DO BETTER.
Pros. Some teachers seem to care. They show a lot of passion for the craft and are skillful. The shows were really well done. Cons. The whole school is set up as a farm for the dance team. If your kid is not on the dance team, don’t expect much more then what is in the classes. When I asked how to help my child improve, and what should we be working on I was told “to look up YouTube videos”. Not allowed to watch classes. Makes it so you can’t help your child outside of class. My kid was tripped and stepped on during class several times. Teacher said they didn’t see anything in a class with 5 kids and 2 teachers. I never signed any kind of waiver for any kind of video or pictures in class. Teacher’s aid was taking videos of the kids and showing them to her friends at school. When I asked the owner about this I was assured that videos were not ok and that she would handle it. It happened several more times. When I asked the owner about it the story changed to we do it so the kids can see what they’re doing wrong. I guess the walls of mirrors are not enough. Then I was told the video was for a “progress report” I never got. Between costume and tickets I spent close to $300 per show just to see my kid on stage for 3 mins. For the other 2 HOURS my kid is sitting back stage somewhere just waiting. They don’t seem to learn a real techniques. They are just practicing their 3 min dance for the next recital. I’m happy to say we are at a smaller school with more personalized teaching. The parents are allowed to see the kids practice. I can see my child’s routine and help with home practices. Gladly traded in the whole production for a 30 min recital.
My daughter has been with Academy of Dance for three years now. She loves it and enjoy the friends she has made. Academy of Dance is very convenient and it is not not over crowded. The studio provides a great learning environment for my child. The end of year shows are awesome!
